HYPER RACING TULSA SHOOTOUT 2016

The racing format of the Tulsa Shootout and the competitive nature of the best cars in the nation allows for very little error. Whether on the track, or in the pits, it is very important to keep mistakes to an absolute minimum. The Hyper team has collectively logged over 20 years of Tulsa Shootout experiences which we are pooling together to make your 2016 Tulsa Shootout as successful as possible. Each day, the Hyper Team will have a meeting for our teams around 8:30am to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have regarding anything pertaining to the race or your cars. Please help us use this time to prepare for the day ahead.

Chasing the track

Throughout the course of the week, the racing surface will see nearly 1000 cars making a total of over 30,000 laps on the track. Considering this, the responsibility of the track prep crew seems monumental. However, you will probably be surprised with their effectiveness and efficiency in keeping the grip level of the track at a point which promotes passing and multi-lane racing. The progression of the surface from wet and tacky to very dry and slick can happen in a matter of minutes or only a few races. We cannot express how important it is to stay in tune with the changing track conditions and adjust your car and race plan accordingly. Each day, the track is freshly prepared and will start out wet and tacky. If you find yourself in an early heat race, be prepared for this very high grip level. During practice day, the track prep is usually less frequent than the other days, in order to provide enough time for1000 entries take practice laps. Therefore, your car will likely feel loose in practice but don’t let that fool you for your heat race. There is a good chance that the track will have a lot more grip for your heat race. So a knee-jerk reaction to trend your setup to the tight side may not be the best decision. Keep an eye on the changing race track and feel free to lean on the Hyper staff for advice. We are here to help.

Lineup Board

The lineup board is located at the top of the ramp entrance to the track.  The race lineups will be arranged by race number starting with race #1 and increasing sequentially depending on total race count for the day. For example, you may be in race #65 for the day. The races may not always be labeled by class.  Find your car number on the lineup board and be aware of your race number for every time you approach the track, including practice. You must go out for practice in your race number

Staging Area

The staging area is located behind the pit grandstand and at the front of the pit area. You must use the south aisle to access the staging area. If you attempt to push your car through one of the center aisles into the staging area, you will be redirected to the south aisle (the south aisle is on the right as you head toward the track).  Notice the lighted display on the rear of the pit grandstand facing the pit area, which displays the race number that is due in staging at that time.  Your race number will be displayed on this board and called to the staging area 5 race numbers before your group is scheduled to be on the track. So there will always be 5 races pre-staged. When you see your race number on the display, and/or hear that number announced, push your car to the staging area. The staging area has 2 lanes. Typically, odd number races go to lane 1 and even numbered races to lane 2. Know you race number and starting position before you get to the staging area.  Pay attention to the race directors and the Shootout staff when you arrive in staging for any changes or further direction. Your fuel will be tested during this time as well. Be ready to remove the fuel cap so that the race directors can access your fuel tank.

Ramp

As the races before you enter onto the track, you will advance further into the staging area and toward the ramp leading to the track. The next race scheduled to enter the track will stage in starting lineup order on the ramp. Do not start your car until the race director indicates to do so. The race director is very strict about this. At this point you will have about 2 minutes of engine running time before you enter the track and line up for the start of the race. So the engine will not be up to operating temperature. We suggest raising the engine RPM to 4000-5000 while you are sitting on the ramp to help build a little more temperature before the race begins.

Fuel

The Tulsa Shootout requires the use of a unique blend of fuel for the event. Fuel must be purchased at the fuel trailer which is located just outside the north entrance to the building. This fuel contains approximately 10% ethanol, intended to improve the air quality inside the building. Colored dye will be added to the fuel for the purpose of identification. Your fuel will be checked each time your car enters the staging area. Any infraction will result in immediate disqualification from the entire event. No outside fuel will be permitted inside the building. Any trailers or cars found to be transporting outside fuel into the building will be escorted from the premises by the Tulsa Fire Marshall. This special blend fuel has no effect in regards to fuel tuning of the engine as compared to the 100% methanol normally used. No adjustments will be needed in consideration of the Tulsa Fuel.

Passing Points

Passing points are used during the heat races and qualifiers. There will be 8 or 9 cars per heat race. The top 72 in passing points from the heats will transfer to the qualifiers. Using a 4 car inversion, those 72 cars will make up 6 qualifying races (12 cars in each). Passing points are also used in the qualifying races. Your points from the heats and the qualifiers are added together. The top 16 cars in passing points after the heats and qualifiers will make up the first 16 positions in the A main. The remainder of the top 72 in passing points (17-72) will make up the top 7 starting positions in the B mains. There will be 8 B mains. Passing point positions 73 – 112 will make up the remainder of starting places in the B mains (positions 8-12). Cars in passing point positions 113 and greater after the heat races will line up into a number of C mains determined by the total number of cars. The number of cars which transfer from the C main to the B main will also be determined by car count. This information will also be listed on the lineup board.

 

 

Day 1 – Tuesday December 29, 2015 – MOVE IN

Parking – 9am-6pm –Organizing and parking the cars in the pit area will take all day. You will likely spend a large amount of the day waiting around for the call to enter the pits with your cars and tools. You may spend this time exploring the arena, familiarizing yourself with the area and taking photos (don’t forget to get snap a photo of the driller in front of the building). The order that the cars may enter the building is first-come, first-served. It is nearly impossible to project an exact time of when we will unload the trailers and be able to push the cars inside. So please stay within a few minutes of the building in case we get last minute notice of when we may enter the pits. The cars will be unloaded from the trailers with forklifts but evacuating the tools and spare parts is very much a team activity. So please be ready to claim your equipment when it’s being unloaded so that you can get it inside a quickly as possible.  We will have the parts trailer inside the building one day ahead of time and your pit spaces blocked off in the general vicinity of the trailer. Find the space indicated with your name and car number. Then feel free to make yourself at home and spend some time arranging your pit area. We will have the trailer open, equipped with electricity and compressed air.  If the fuel truck is selling fuel, take some time to grab 5 gallons. Maybe you can beat the line.

Sign in – All classes, 12:00pm – 6:00pm. The sign in area is located near the Southwest corner of the building. Each class will have a designated line. Pay attention to the signs so that you get into the correct line. If you are racing in 2 or more classes that require you to be in different lines, you will be able to sign in for all of your classes when you reach the front of the line. Just be sure to make the sign-in staff aware of how many classes you are racing when you reach the front of the line. You will pull a pill for each class. This will determine your starting position for the heat races.

Hyper Shootout Teams Meeting 5:00pm – By this time, everyone should be inside the building and be relatively situated in their pit area. We invite all participating Hyper teams to attend an informal meeting at the Hyper trailer to discuss car setups and general expectations of the week to come. We are not trying to ram our setups down your throat but discuss some of the things that have worked for us in the past which may also be helpful to you. Feel free to address any topic

 Day 2 – Wednesday December 30, 2015 – PRACTICE/HEATS

Doors open at 8am – Try to be in the building at 8am. Each day, between 8-9am you will have an opportunity to start and run your engine for 10 minutes inside the building. An announcement will be made, indicating when you may start your engine. The Shootout staff is very strict regarding engines running inside the building. If you need to run your car at any time, other than the 10 minute period at the beginning of each day, you must push it outside to do so.

Practice - 9am – 5pm – Check the lineup board for the practice order. You must practice with your group according to your pill draw. If you are not in staging with the race number assigned on the lineup board, you will miss your practice session. During practice, the track is usually dry in consideration of time. Try to watch the track conditions closely and make adjustments accordingly. We will also be paying very close attention to the conditions and will try to make you aware of the track condition changes throughout the week. Chasing the track conditions accurately is one of the most difficult aspects of the Tulsa Shootout.

A Class & Non Wing Outlaw Heats – 6:30pm - After practice, the track will be torn up and prepared for the heats. So, if your heat is on Wednesday night, be ready for a 180 degree turn in track condition from practice. During the heats, qualifiers and mains, the track will be prepared more frequently (generally, each 20-25 races).  When you push your car to the staging area for your heat race, be sure to pick up your transponder at the transponder table located next to the lineup board. The transponder will be provided to you along with a strip of duct tape used to fasten the transponder to the car. The transponder must be fastened to the left rear down tube, between the rear bumper sockets. When you exit the track and go past the scale, Shootout staff will direct you across the scale and cut the transponder from the car before you make your way back to the pits.

Day 3 – Thursday December 31, 2015 – HEATS/QUALIFIERS

Doors Open - 8:00am – The fuel truck will be open just outside the North entrance to the building. This line can get very long. Make sure you have enough fuel for the day. We will have extra fuel jugs in the parts trailer for you to use in case you need to borrow one, just ask.  Also remember to be prepared for engine starts before 9:00am.

Heats – 9:00am – 6:00pm – Check the lineup board for your race number. Keep an eye on the track conditions. Please ask us for anything that you are unsure about.  

Day 4 – Friday January 1, 2015 – HEATS/QUALIFIERS

Doors Open - 8:00am – The fuel truck will be open just outside the North entrance to the building. This line can get very long. Make sure you have enough fuel for the day. We will have extra fuel jugs in the parts trailer for you to use in case you need to borrow one, just ask.  Also remember to be prepared for engine starts before 9:00am.

Heats – 9:00am – 6:00pm – Check the lineup board for your race number. Keep an eye on the track conditions. Please ask us for anything that you are unsure about. The Hyper team is here to help you, if you have a quick turnaround between races, please ask us for assistance. Even If it is as simple as removing and installing wings or helping push your car to the staging area. Sometimes every second counts.

 

Day 5 – Saturday January 2, 2015 – NON QUALIFIER RACES/MAIN EVENTS

Doors Open - 8:00am – The fuel truck will be open just outside the North entrance to the building. This line can get very long. Make sure you have enough fuel for the day. We will have extra fuel jugs in the parts trailer for you to use in case you need to borrow one, just ask.  Also remember to be prepared for engine starts before 9:00am.

Non Qualifier Races – 9:00am – Check the lineup board for your race number. This day will be the last chance to get up on the wheel and get into the race if you are not already qualified. C mains, B mains and finally, Last Chance Qualifier results will determine the starting field of the 24 best in the world. If you are advancing through mains, be prepared for a quick turnaround between races. In some cases, you will have only a few minutes to get re-fueled, make adjustments and get some fresh tires on your car before your next race rolls off. We will try to keep an eye on your progress and provide help as you need it.  If you need help or have questions, PLEASE ASK!

Opening Ceremonies and Main Events – 6:00pm – All drivers are asked to participate in the opening ceremonies. Drivers will converge at the lineup board and arrange into groups according to home state. The highest point scoring driver earns the honor of holding your state flag as the drivers walk onto the track and arrange themselves around the infield. At this time the National Anthem will be played before the first A main rolls off.
